Getting to know Kelsey:
Q: What would you say was the biggest factor that lead to your decision to use the first time?
A: “I really can’t give an honest answer to what led me to use for the first time, but being influenced is a big part of it. Influenced by my boyfriend at the time and also by my family. Just one time seemed so harmless.”
Q: At what point did you make the decision that you were going to get clean and stop using drugs?
A: “After a year and a half of my life flashed by and I was in and out (mostly out) of my son’s life DHR got involved. He was living with my mom and stepdad and, at the time, my mama was doing just as bad, if not worse, than I was and was so close to being put into the Foster Care system and I had no idea. All I can remember is how badly I just wanted to go home and I couldn’t… the drug wouldn’t let me. I give all the glory to God for giving me the strength and hope to get clean. Hope came when I found out that I was pregnant and was blessed with my little girl. I’ll never forget April 16th, 2016!”
Q: Before you knew about Color Code Cookies, did you have hopes of being able to find a steady job?
A: “When I was in rehab I was pregnant and, of course, was worried about being able to find a job. I was going drug court in a different county and had no vehicle which made it more of a challenge. My mom and stepdad had worked for Mr. Turnipseed for several years and through them I heard that he was opening Color Code Cookies, a company that hired women in my situation.”
Q: How has your life changed since working at Color Code Cookies?
A: “I’ve been working at Color Code Cookies for one and a half years and a lot has changed in my life. I have so many things that I never dreamed I would. For one thing, this is the first job that I have been able to keep in my life. This company has pushed me and supported me 100% to get my GED and I am one test away from that being a reality! I also have earned my ServSafe Certificate since working here. They have helped me build a better life and future for my little family.”
Q: What does working for Color Code Cookies mean to you?
A: “Working for Color Code Cookies has showed me that if I work hard enough my addiction can no longer be a crutch for me to lean on. I now believe that I will have a bright and full future and that means the world to me.”
Q: Is the work environment at Color Code Cookies different than other places you have worked?
A: “Color Code Cookies has been my only job since getting out of rehab and off of probation, but it is so different than anywhere else I have worked. I honestly don’t know if I would still be clean if I didn’t work here. Here I have great friends and amazing support.”
Q: What hopes do you have for you and your family’s future?
A: “My hopes for my future are to earn my GED and to get a better education so that I can influence my kids, brothers and sisters in a good way. I hope to be able to watch each and every one of us be great and live a happy, Drug Free life.”
Q: What do you think about our mission to offer second chance employment to women?
A: “Our mission gives hope to other women who are going through the same thing that I went through at a time in their lives when they need it the most. Being able to get back on your feet is one of the biggest parts of staying sober.”
Q: Do you see yourself differently now that you have overcome addiction?
A: “Yes, I am a totally different person. I am stronger and wiser than I was when I made the decision to use. I have overcome extreme challenges in my life and have learned that, with the help of God, I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.”
Q: What is the greatest need you see for women trying to turn their lives away from addiction and towards recovery?
A: “#1 – God, #2 – Hope, #3 – Results”
Q: Have you seen the lives of your coworkers change since working at Color Code Cookies?
A: “We have all been encouraged to better ourselves. Two of us have enrolled in school, which is a big deal considering our pasts. I am proud to say that all of the women working at our company have chosen to better ourselves.”
“My favorite cookie flavor is Sugar!”
