Our mission is to create employment opportunities for women in rehabilitation programs. Each delicious cookie made represents our goal to foster self-worth and inspire change in the lives of our associates; change that is made possible when hope is met with opportunity.
Color Code Cookies is an organization creating hope for women at a major crossroad in their lives. These women have a background that can sometimes lead to an extremely difficult and rocky future. You see, the employees of Color Code Cookies are women who are all either in or have completed court-ordered drug rehabilitation programs.
In 2016, our founder Jim Turnipseed was eating at a local Huddle House and happened to meet a woman who was managing a group of women living in the rehab center down the street in Eastaboga, AL. She and Jim struck up a conversation about how difficult it is to find employment while under the Color Code System.
When you are arrested for a drug violation and go before a judge, there are two options: 1. You are sent to jail and 2. You are placed in a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program –the Color Code System. The color code drug testing system requires those on probation to call an automated number every day that lists the color of the day. If the color assigned to you is named, you are required by law to go in that day and take your drug test.
There are no excuses to exempt you from a drug test; it is mandatory. This is hard for someone who is looking for a job but also hard for someone in a work place because they have to ask for time off for the testing. No matter the position the person is in, they are found in an uphill battle coming out of prison. A fresh start is often too difficult thus leading them back down the path of destruction.
Turnipseed came up with a solution for these women. He recognized the struggles that the women in the rehabilitation center were facing as a result of being on the Color Code System. Jim’s son, JK is a trained cordon bleu chef. Together, they created the idea to bake cookies. The women would have job security baking cookies. Their mission was born and soon, a reality would launch.
JK began experimenting with different recipes to perfect their cookies – we currently offer Oatmeal Raisin, M&M, Chocolate Chip and Red Velvet.
Turnipseed purchased an old barbeque restaurant down the road from the rehab center and turned it into an operating kitchen where the women bake, package and label each cookie made.
There is so much more to this establishment than the flour, sugar, eggs, etc. being used. With each cookie baked, there is a story of hope, one of love and one of endurance. These cookies symbolize second chances in life. These women have gained strength and confidence knowing that they have security somewhere and are making a difference. It is a place of empowerment and it embodies the picture of hope!
The last few words of our mission statement claim that “change is made possible when hope is met with opportunity.” The women of Color Code Cookies are making a change! Their lives are better and they are serving a purpose because of the opportunity they have been given!
